Insufficient power of the diesel-powered VT 11.5 (Class 601) led to the conversion of four power 
cars to gas turbine propulsion in 1971. Their most distinctive feature was the large air intakes in 
front of the driver's cab, which supplied the turbine with air.

Due to deficiencies, operating these trains became increasingly uneconomical, which is why the
 multiple units, designated Class 602, were retired by the DB in 1978 and 1979. Only the power car 
602 003 has been preserved for museum purposes; it can be found today in the DB Museum 
Nuremberg.
