A total of 257 units of the universal electric locomotive of the series 1042 were built from 1963
onwards. After 1966, more powerful engines were installed to achieve a top speed of 150 km/h. These
locomotives were designated as class 1042.5. The installation of a resistance brake gave them their
characteristic roof constructions and they were equipped with inverted single-arm pantographs. They
were used to pull various types of trains with a focus on fast passenger and freight trains,
including cross-border services to Germany.
Locomotive 1042.643 was built by Simmering-Graz-Pauker in Graz and had the factory number 71118.
ELIN supplied the electrical equipment. The ÖBB approval test took place in January 1975. Before the
general overhaul on April 30, 1992, the locomotive was equipped with an HG box of the Valousek
design.
