On the occasion of the International Transport Exhibition in Munich in 1965, the German Federal
Railroad ran trains regularly for the first time at speeds of up to 200 km/h. The four locomotives
of the class E 03 were then used for test runs and to haul particularly fast TEE and F trains. With
the delivery of the class 103.1 locomotives, the pilot class locomotives were transferred to test
service over time. From the summer of 1974, all 103 pilot series units were based at the Hamburg-
Eidelstedt depot. In addition to three express train pairs to Nuremberg and Munich, express trains
to Lüneburg, Hanover, Hildesheim and Bremen were on the timetable at that time. Long-distance
traffic was gradually discontinued, although unscheduled express trains did take place. In the
autumn of 1979, the use of the 103.0 class in scheduled service was discontinued and all four
locomotives were permanently transferred to test service by the German Federal Railways. Replica of
103 002, as it was in operation until September 1976. It then received UIC sockets, grab handles and
ergonomic access ladders at the ends. A year later, single-arm pantographs followed, before the
skirts under the buffer beams were finally removed in the autumn of 1980. The model is perfect for
the 160 km/h "Hispania" express train, which is suitable instead of a planned series 103.
