With the introduction of the DB's serial system on January 1, 1968, the motor cars of the VT 11.5 
were renumbered to 
BR 601 and the middle cars were renumbered to BR 901. In 1971, the Deutsche Bundesbahn established 
the Intercity system as a fast urban transport system with 1st class vehicles in two-hour service 
-beat on. An average of six units were used daily. After a renovation, it was used in 
special tourist traffic ("Alpen-See-Express") from 1980 onwards. Starting from Hamburg and Dortmund, 
the tourist trains ran to popular holiday areas in southern Germany and Austria.
