With the introduction of the DB series on January 1, 1968, the VT 11.5 electric locomotives were converted to Class 601, and the intermediate cars to Class 901. In 1971, DB introduced the intercity system as a city express traffic system with first-class carriages and a two-hour interval. On average, 6 units were used daily. After renovation, it was used for special tourist transport ("Alpen-See-Express") from 1980. From Hamburg and Dortmund, the tourist locomotives travelled to popular vacation regions in southern Germany and Austria.
