German Federal Railway (Deutsche Bundesbahn) Class 221 124 diesel locomotive.

■ Freestanding grab rails
■ In digital operation with switchable shunting lights and individually switchable headlights or
taillights

To cope with the increased traffic volume, especially on non-electrified main lines, the German
Federal Railway (Deutsche Bundesbahn) acquired a total of 50 locomotives of the V 200.1 series
starting in 1962. These differed from their predecessors in that they had more powerful engines.
This increased power was necessary for the ever-longer and therefore heavier passenger trains. Their
main operating areas included the lines between Kempten and Lindau, Offenburg and Konstanz, and the
famous Vogelfluglinie (Bird Flight Line) between Germany and Denmark. During their service life,
these locomotives were later reclassified as Class 221 and often received an ocean blue and beige
livery
