In 2001, BLS Lötschbergbahn AG decided to order ten Traxx locomotives for cross-border freight 
transport. The BLS Cargo locomotives with the Swiss designation Re 485 are technically identical to 
the SBB Cargo class Re 482 and DB Schenker class 185 engines with additional Swiss package. The 
remaining Ae 4/4 engines were taken out of service when the Traxx locomotives were delivered between 
December 2002 and mid-2003. The new engines are mainly used to transport transit freight trains from 
and to Germany.
