The order from DB Cargo for 200 of these units was the main driving force behind the development of 
the TRAXX AC1, as the locomotive type was retrospectively designated in 2003. The name TRAXX stands 
for "Transnational Railway Applications with eXtreme flexibility". The locomotive, directly derived 
from the Class 145 but with a modified design and class designation, was now compatible with both of 
the AC voltage systems common in Europe: 15 kV/16 2/3 Hz and 25 kV/50 Hz. Weighing 84 tons, it 
delivered 5.6 MW of continuous power and was approved for speeds up to 140 
km/h.
