New 2026: Powerful performance in the Scandinavian diesel era – Class DSB MZ

The DSB MZ class consists of 61 diesel-electric locomotives delivered in four production series to
Danske Statsbaner (DSB). Between 1967 and 1978, the machines with the operating numbers MZ 1401-1461
were built by the Swedish company Nydqvist och Holm AB (NOHAB) in Trollhättan – under license from
the American General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD). The locomotives impressed with robust
technology, high performance and their distinctive design, inspired by NOHAB's successful tradition.
Over the decades, the MZ proved itself in both express passenger traffic and heavy goods transport,
demonstrating impressive versatility. From the year 2000 onwards, the class was gradually retired by
DSB. While most locomotives were sold to private railway companies at home and abroad, the first
built MZ 1401 was preserved as a museum locomotive. It now stands in Randers and commemorates an era
when diesel power formed the backbone of Scandinavian rail transport. With eight locomotives still
in service at DB Cargo Scandinavia and further in service worldwide, the DSB MZ remains a symbol of
reliability, performance and international importance in locomotive engineering.
