News 2026: Between 1946 and 1989, the Class 500 diesel-electric locomotives shaped the daily 
operation of the Dutch State Railways (NS). A total of 45 machines were in operation – reliable, 
powerful and unmistakable. The first ten units (Nos. 501-510) arrived in the Netherlands 
immediately after the Second World War via the British War Office. The distinctive three-axle gray 
locomotives quickly became indispensable helpers in shunting operations – especially at larger 
stations such as 
Utrecht, Zwolle and Rotterdam Feijenoord. Thanks to their great reliability, NS quickly expanded the 
fleet: 35 more locomotives (No. 511-545) followed, first in classic olive green and from the 1970s 
in modern yellow-grey.
