The Class 86 locomotives were designed by the DRG (German State Railway) for hauling heavy freight 
trains on lines with gentle gradients, as well as passenger and mixed trains on lines with steeper 
gradients. A total of 774 locomotives were built by 1943, with almost all German locomotive 
manufacturers participating in their construction. The Deutsche Bundesbahn (German Federal Railway) 
used these agile and powerful tank locomotives as "jacks-of-all-trades" for all types of trains, 
primarily on main and branch lines in the low mountain ranges. The Class 86 locomotives could also 
be seen hauling ore wagons, especially in the Saarland with its ironworks in Neunkirchen, Brebach, 
Burbach, Dillingen, and Völklingen.
