In the mid-1960s, the E 03 class was created. It was the most powerful DB locomotive to date and was 
intended to pull heavy passenger trains. Between 1970 and 1974, locomotives of the 145 series were 
put into 
use. The last 30 locomotives (from 103 216 onwards) were given an enlarged cab, making them 
700 mm longer.

After its official service period had ended, many fans of this locomotive class 
suggested that a new traffic red paintwork with a contrasting colour frame be designed for the 
locomotive. This new 
design is similar to the classic 103 locomotives, which have a red/beige colour combination. ROCO 
was the sponsor of this paintwork. As a unique feature during the presentation, the locomotive 
received a dedication text under each cab window on the right side.
