On January 24, 1905, electric operation began on the 23.7 km long railway line into the Ammer
Valley. It was the first operation of an electric train under a simple AC overhead line. This made
it the first line to be equipped with a new system, the "traction current", which is still in use in
Central and Northern Europe today.
The line was originally operated by electric rail cars, and later by small electric locomotives,
which could reach speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour. The energy, in the form of single-phase
alternating current, came from the Kammerl hydroelectric power station on the Ammer. From 1930
onwards, the lean LAG 5 - later redesignated 169 005 - reinforced the electric locomotive fleet of
the Oberammergau Railway. Despite its short length of 8.7 m, this little powerhouse was able to
prove its worth. Over the decades, the railway became very popular with all railway enthusiasts due
to the level of comfort and the idyllic surroundings of the Bavarian local railway. The era of the
"Neinasechzga" in local transport on the Oberammergau Railway ended in May 1981. With the retirement
of the old locomotives, a scheduled service was introduced and the charm of an incomparable era
disappeared irrevocably.
