With the merger of Dutch freight transport with the German Railion Group, DB AG gained access to a 
portion of the NS 1600 series electric locomotives. In 2012, ten machines were painted traffic red 
as part of the maintenance. At the initiative of some locomotive drivers, the last three 
locomotives were decorated with farewell texts at the end of their service with DB Cargo NL in 2020.
