Many of the DR locomotives that remained in the country after the end of the war were converted to 
oil fire. Until they were gradually replaced by modern diesel and electric locomotives, the class 44 
locomotives formed the backbone of heavy goods services. Because of their enormous tractive power, 
they were called 'Jumbos'. The DR retired the last of these "Pachyderms" in 1986.
